Michigan

We have always raved about state parks.  Tonight we are at Petoskey State Park in Michigan.  It is a beautiful park with large sand dunes along the beach.  However, I am less than happy with the campground as a whole.

The campsites here are the most expensive we have paid for when you combine site fee and entrance fee plus taxes, a two night stay came to $78.00.  That wouldn’t be so bad if the sites were anything like others in this price range.  We have an electric (30 amp) only site with a paved pad.  The rest of the site is just dirt.  Muddy dirt.  You would think for what they get they could have spread a little crushed stone around so you can come and go without slogging though the muck.  We have visited state parks in over 38 states and so far this is the first one that I feel I didn’t get the value for the money.   Then again, maybe I’m grumpy because Michigan is the first state we had to pay over $4.00 for gas.  We will think that is cheap by the time we get to Alaska though.

We took a walk on the beach, which is beautiful.  Along the way we came across Ruth who was wading in the shallow water with a gadget that aided her to see underwater.
We asked what she was looking for.  She reached down into the water and produced a stone.  It’s a Petoskey stone.  They are fossilized coral that is unique to this area.  She collects them to make jewelry and other craft items.  When the stones are polished they can be quite beautiful.  Petoskey Stones

I guess I didn’t tell you that we decided to drive up to Alaska just for the adventure of doing it.  We have been to Alaska before and we always wanted to visit again.  Our trip plan kind of began to develop as we traveled.  We had considered the New England states but we would have run out of real estate to visit up there before summer is over.  We do like to keep moving.

We spent a couple of days with our son and his family in Elkhart, IN.  We enjoyed time visiting with the grandkids and Beth, our daughter-in-law.  Jason took the day off to spend time with us while we were there.  He and I put a roof on their chicken coop.

We planned to stop by their house for a couple of reasons.  I had our son, Pete, mail something to us at Jason’s house that we forgot to pack.  Also there is a very good veterinary clinic there where we could get a health certificate examination for Buddy.  She will have to have it to cross over into Canada.

Our ceiling vent fan just started making all kinds of noise.  Then some liquid sprinkled down on me here at the table.  I jumped up and shut if off.  Caught in the blades is a large tree frog.  He is not doing well and is not expected to recover his injuries.  I will have to climb on the roof tomorrow and extract him from the fan blades.
